Sandy and a Final

So due to the crazy hurricane (Hurricane Sandy) that just passed through NYC and the fact that I have a final that opens tomorrow I have been bad at blogging lately. I spent most of my free time helping my sister find a place to go since she has had no power now for two days and who knows when it will come back. All of manhattan below 40th street pretty much lost power and much of the cell service.

I also ran a lot of errands for one of the student groups I am in, I shadowed a family medicine doctor, and I met my pediatrics mentor who is totally awesome. It also got cold here, so welcome to the midwest I guess. I am learning to turn on heaters in my apartment finally, though I am still trying hard to hold out!

Cardiovascular/Respiratory final coming up! Not sure when I'm taking it, but definitely before Sunday! Woo. Musculoskelatal System up next, which means a crazy amount of anatomy memorization.

Ok so update... I turned on the heater and its amazing. I amend my position, I am now pro heater :)

WORLD CHAMPS!

This weekend we had a Halloween  party put on by one of the medical fraternities here. It was pretty fun and I went as Pikachu. Saturday was subsequently made for sleeping a lot and watching football and game 3 of the World Series. Michigan and Cal lost, but Stanford won and moved up in the polls and the Giants won too!

Yesterday was full of errands at Costco and Meijer, raspberry picking in Ypsilanti, some inner tube water polo (we won our first game!) and watching game 4 of the World Series. The Giants ended up winning a thriller in 10 innings to become the World Champs! It always drives me crazy that they call it the World Champs when it's only pro teams here, but since 5/20 of the post season roster is from Venezuela for the Giants I guess I can go for it. Anyways it was super exciting!

TGIF!

Yay, it's finally the weekend again! I finished my quiz early tonight and that means that unlike last weekend I actually have two full days to relax. I have a few errands I need to do, but otherwise I am excited to relax. We have a school wide Halloween party tonight at one of the medical fraternities, so that should be fun times. The World Series is also coming to me tomorrow and I am stoked to root for my SF Giants! So far they're up 2-0 so it's going great! Two more games to close out San Francisco's second ever World Series title!

Busy day

Today started as all other days begin. I went to class for a very long time. I listened to a few lectures and heard from a patient who has a LVAD, which was really interesting.

After class I played nine holes of golf. I am not a good golfer. I did, however, bogey two holes and double bogey one. The other 6 were not so good. I actually hit one of my tee shots onto the green, but I proceed to three put, so I did not make par.

After golf I ate dinner and watched the first inning on the World Series Game 1. I saw enough to see Pablo Sandoval's first home run of the night before heading to water polo practice. When I got home from practice I was stoked to see the Giants up 8 to 1 over Detroit (being a Giants fan and living in Michigan is quite something right now). Panda (Sandoval) also hit three home runs AND a single tonight. 4 for 4 OMG that is amazing.

After the game I did a little work and now I'm going to bed because I have mandatory class at 9am yay. Wearing my Giants shirt for sure tomorrow! Go Giants!!

CHAMPIONS!

This morning I got up and studied for my weekly quiz and took it around noon. During most of the quiz I was just praying that I was going to pass, but when I hit submit and waited those awful moments for the score to load I was rewarded with quite a good score. I freak out a little too much sometimes.

After the quiz I went to Mitchell Field to play in the Co-Rec A Championship intramural soccer game, and guess what... we WON! We are officially the IM champions, and we got a shirt to commemorate it! Super fun time.

We also played in a playoff volleyball game this evening, but unfortunately we didn't win that one. We still had a lot of fun though. Now it's time to watch the SF Giants beat the Cardinals (I hope). Go Giants! I need a Detroit-SF World Series because I want to go and cheer for my home team!!

It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine!

Today was a big game day, for Michigan and for Stanford. Stanford won the the actual "Big Game" and Michigan pulled out a win with a last second field goal to beat "Little Brother," which is apparently what we called Michigan State. The game was so much fun, and the atmosphere was amazing. We even got to rush the field at the Big House which was so fun. Everyone was cheering and celebrating and it was so much fun. Pre-game my friend Anthony and I also dominated at cornhole (a game they play in the midwest with beanbags and two boards with a hole in them, Google it). We were 5-0 and basically blew out all of our opponents. So much fun.

In other news, we won our soccer game yesterday, so we are playing in the IM championship game tomorrow. I also will be taking my first Sunday quiz tomorrow, which sucks, but at least I had a fun non school Saturday full of tailgating and football!

Soccer win!

In the theme of sporting posts, we won our IM soccer game today! We play again tomorrow and if we win that game we go to the championship game, yay! I also went to a condo association meeting and it was really boring. People really love to argue about stupid things.

Scrimmage!

Today we had another M1 dinner at a BBQ place which was really fun. I got some great pulled pork and mac and cheese and collard greens. Yum! I also had a real scrimmage at water polo practice tonight and it was so fun to actually play again! I felt great to not be just lap swimming! Have class tomorrow at 8:30am so it's off to bed soon. It's been a great day.

The end of kickball

Last night we had IM kickball playoffs games. Whichever team won our first game got to play a double header, and we dominated, so off we were to the other pitch to play kickball game number two! The second game was much tighter and we ended up loosing by one run to the other team in extra innings. It really sucked because the ref was absolutely awful. Anyways, we had a great time and now our season is over. We are talking about keeping the team together though and playing a different sport in the next IM season.

After the game I went to Chelsea's for a girls chick flick night, where we watched Somethings Gotta Give. I had never seen it before and it was pretty good! It was nice to relax after a long day!

Fun weekend!

This weekend with mom and dad was quite fun, but much too short. Friday was mostly dedicated to class and taking my quiz, but we were able to have dinner together and watch the new CSI:NY! Saturday was dedicated to football! We all had a great time (albeit in the rain) at the Big House and then got depressed when the bad call caused Stanford to loose to Notre Dame, and then got happy again when Cal beat Washington State. We also had a great dinner at Heidelberg, a German restaurant downtown Ann Arbor. Sunday was spent by going to Costco and REI and doing a little cleaning. Oh yea, and dad golfed a round on Friday and another round on Sunday.

Today it was back to class and back to the grind. I'm getting more and more excited for Thanksgiving when I get a whole week to relax! No water polo tonight because pretty much everyone else at Michigan has Fall Break, meaning no classes today or tomorrow, but us lucky med students do not have to take any days off of school.

Mom and Dad are here!

This week has been a pretty busy one. We had the first week of the Cardiovascular/Respiratory sequence and I passed the first quiz this evening. Yesterday I had three IM games in a row (kickball, soccer, and sand volleyball) and they were all the first games of the IM playoffs. My teams won all three games which was awesome! My parents also arrived in Ann Arbor yesterday for the weekend, so it's been great to see them and hang out. They got me some good knives and a TOASTER woo so now I can toast things without having to turn on the oven and be super careful with everything. Tomorrow is game day and we are all going to the Big House! Hopefully it won't rain too badly! Go Blue! And a HUGE GO STANFORD for tomorrow too because they are playing Notre Dame who is undefeated thus far this season. And for the rest of the fam I will add in a Go Bears since they are playing Washington State.

Night!

Another new sequence

Today started our cardiovascular and respiratory sequence. It is so nice to be in an actual system where we can see everything come together instead of just focusing on things so small we can't even see them! We had class from 8:30am-2pm today with an hour and a half lunch since the 11am lecture was really just a Q&A about our anatomy website because they changed it back to the old version due to a few glitches in the new version they were trying to roll out this year. Besides that I spent a lot of time doing my anatomy prelab for tomorrow, and I'm still pretty sure I haven't memorized everything. It's a little scary having to memorize everything so quickly for a 4 point prefab quiz. I thought the point of lab was to learn the body, not the have it completely memorized beforehand. Anyway, I digress.

I also went to water polo tonight so that was nice. I was able to shower and everything there, so now I can just dry my hair and get into bed for a super long day tomorrow! Yay anatomy dissecting days.

First trip to the Dexter Cider Mill

Today started out very strangely. I woke up at midnight and couldn't get back to sleep for an hour and then woke up at 6:15am to meet my friends to drive to Lake Michigan to go surfing! I got dressed and got my thing together, and then found out one of my friends bailed so the gas would be way more expensive. It was also supposed to start raining by the lake around 1pm so we decided to go back to sleep instead. Kind of a bummer, but sleeping was nice even though I didn't get to sleep for a while.

Around 9am the cab didn't come to pick up the applicant I was hosting, so I had to spend over an hour getting her to the airport instead of sleeping longer. When I got home I quickly hopped into the shower and then headed out to the Dexter Cider Mill with four of my classmates for hot apple cider, cinnamon sugar doughnuts, and a beautiful view. I also bought some apple cider jelly, which should be awesome I'm hoping!

After the cider mill I came home, regrouped, and then headed out to the movie theater here for the first time to see Pitch Perfect. I really enjoyed the movie a lot! All of the cast was pretty awesome and I enjoyed the plot. It was a really nice relaxing afternoon.

When the movie was over I went straight home to catch the football games of the day! Michigan played Purdue and was winning throughout the entire game, so I didn't watch too much of it since the Stanford-Arizona game was full of thrills! After a lackluster performance by the offense last week, Nunes and crew put up 54 points today and it was awesome. The defense on the other hand allowed 48 points which was scary. We ended up being down by 14 points with around 6 minutes left, but came back to tie it before winning in overtime. Totally scary and very thrilling.

Now it's time to switch gears and watch some playoff baseball. The A's and the Giants are both in the postseason and playing tonight. The A's are playing Detroit in this series, making life very difficult for me as a new Michigander, but I will always cheer for my hometown teams! So Go A's and Go Giants!

CFM continues

CFM week has been great so far, but very exhausting. This morning I got to go to clinic with a pediatric ENT doctor and this afternoon i went to a retirement home to chat with a senior citizen. Both were great, and I was even able to get home and have time to take a nap which was lovely. I cannot wait to catch up on some much needed sleep over the weekend. It will be glorious. For now its a 9am start tomorrow and a really early friday. It's also an interview day on friday and I'm hosting another applicant tomorrow night.

CFM Week

Today was the beginning of our CFM week, and boy was it a long long day.We had lecture from 8am-12pm and then again from 1pm-2:30pm followed by an hour and a half of small group. We talked a lot about some of the visits we are going on this week and also about death and dying. 8am is definitely not my best friend right now and I massively struggled all day.

After class I played a volleyball game until around 5:30 and then walked home with my friends. Now I have a few hours to kill before water polo, and I got one of my classmates to come tonight too! I'm watching some CSI:NY before I make dinner so that's nice. Yay for no studying after the long day we had. CFM week definitely has a few plus sides :)
