Sunday with Phidelis and his Family

This morning was pretty relaxing as a Sunday should be. I woke up around 10am and then read a little bit and watched half of the movie "Safe Haven" since I read that book two weeks ago. The movie is pretty different than the book, which always aggregates me, but at least I don't know for sure how everything is going to happen. My computer battery eventually got low and I had been watching on the porch, so I went back into my room and worked on uploading the pictures from my camera onto my computer.

Around 2pm Phidelis picked us up for a day of fun with his family. We drove with two of his friends to his home in town and had a delicious lunch made by his wife and sister-in-law and some of the older girls (I'm guessing). It is custom here that the children do not eat with the adults or visitors, which is unfortunate, but we still had a great lunch. After lunch we toured his home a bit and looked at some pictures of his daughter that lives in Kampala. We hung out a bit and eventually got ready to head to the village where he grew up.

All the kids, Phidelis, his brother, Joan and I got into the car and headed out to the village, the name of which I don't remember. When we got there it was nuts. I swear every village man was in the center of the village, which is less than a city block long and had only a few very small shops. Everyone wanted to talk to us and shake our hand, and the drunk ones didn't always want to let go very quickly. I also got asked for money by some people since they think that all white people have a lot of money. We walked around and met a bunch of people who did not speak English very well if at all and I spent a lot of time thoroughly confused. It was interesting thats for sure.

After seeing the center of the village we walked to the home of Phidelis's sister where we spent the rest of the night. When I got there there were a bunch of village kids and they were all scared of us, but most of them eventually warmed up to us. It is so weird to me how they can be so excited to come see us, yet at the same time if we take one step near them they disperse so quickly. Anyways, we spent the night hanging out with the family and friends and had a really great time. There was no power there so we had one flashlight and we talked and people played some music in Japadola and it was awesome. We left around 9:15pm and drove back to Tororo town and said goodbye to Phidelis and his family. I really hope we see them again soon.

It has been a really wonderful weekend full of warm welcomes and great people. I am really thankful to have these experiences and I hope we can stay in touch with many of the people we are meeting here in Uganda for years to come! Back to work tomorrow so it's off to bed now!
