The Super Long Travel Day

Today was an incredibly long travel day, only rivaled by the journey to Pakwach and back and the flying days to and from Africa. We woke up at 5am at Byoona Amagara on Lake Bunyonyi, got our things together, and were on a motor boat back to the dock at Rutinda by 5:30am. The boat ride was quite beautiful as it was really dark out and there were a ton of stars. I was easily one of the coolest boat rides I've ever been on. We made it to Rutinda in good time and our special was waiting for us at the dock to drive us into Kabale town.

We made it to Kabale without any issues and went straight to the ATM. I tried twice to get out money (one amount first, then a bit less) but there was none in the ATM I was using so I tried the other one and my bank decided to decline my card, oh joy! I tried to call them, but since it's a small bank they weren't open so I had no money. Luckily we were traveling in a group and someone owed me money so it worked out. We boarded the PostBus at the post office and at 7am we were on the road to Kampala.

The bus ride was fine, but much too long. I slept a little, but not too much. The beginning of the ride was so cold and my window wouldn't stay shut and the middle and end were so hot. The lady I was sitting next to was nice and shared some biscuits with me, but other than that I had no food and I was starving. I tried to buy fruit once, but the man passed me over. Through trying not to drink water since there was no bathroom and not having any food to eat I was fairly miserable.

We finally arrived in Kampala in one of the worst traffic jams I've ever been in. We got to the main Kampala post office after 4:30 and I was so ready to get off the bus. From there Jenny said goodbye and went back to her apartment in Kampala and the other four of us went to get some food to eat before the next leg of our journeys. The food was good, and the first real sandwich I have had in Uganda. I also had some fresh pineapple juice which was a little sweet, but great. We didn't spend too much time eating since we all just wanted to get home.

We walked to the taxi park in Kampala and the man we asked for directions from ended up being super nice. He walked us all the way there and made sure we all got on our respective taxis before saying goodbye. It was great since the Kampala taxi park is incredibly chaotic! The first taxi to Tororo only wanted one person, and we were two, so we got on the next one which thankfully didn't take too long to fill. We left the taxi park at 6:05pm and headed into the awful traffic in Kampala. It took almost two hours just to get out of Kampala! On the drive I watched an episode of Friends and a movie to kill the time since I was so tired of sitting and very uncomfortable.

We eventually made it back to Tororo at 11:20pm. So much sitting. I was so happy to be back. I had told Joan to call and tell them we would need her room a few days ago when we decided we would go back Monday instead of Tuesday and she said that it wouldn't be a problem and didn't call. When we got back, guess what, they were full and she had to sleep in my bed with me. Not so stoked. I am finally back and I can't even relax in my own room. Oh well.

  1. That sounds crazy! Why did you have to reserve a room at your hotel?
