Today work was much of the same, but after work was quite entertaining. We had made plans with the cook at our guest house to attempt to bake a cake since she knew where we could find an oven. She was a little sick so we attempted to find another oven in Tororo to no avail. It is amazing how complicated it is to find an oven in this town!
We set off to buy our final ingredients in town and ran into about half of the office while we were out. It was so crazy! We got our eggs and sugar to complete our cake baking repertoire and headed back to the guest house where Sophie said she was okay to bring us to the hotel she trained at to use the oven. It was pouring so Phidelis's friend Andrew drove us all over to Meritoria to bake. W mixed the batter and it turned out quite well and got it in the oven which was a charcoal oven. We had no idea what temperature it was so we just checked on it every so often. The kitchen was so different than any kitchen I've ever seen, using charcoal and only having a small fridge. It is also not nearly as sparkling clean as kitchens at home. While the cake was baking I had Julie, the cook there, make me some pork and it was really yummy. The cake (oh yea it was a funfetti from scratch without the sprinkles, so essentially a vanilla cake) ended up turning out great, but when we flipped it onto the tray we make shifted with cardboard and tinfoil it broke into many pieces. So it is quite an ugly cake, but a delicious one. It was such a funny and fun night and the people at Meritoria are so nice.
After the cake craziness we went back to the guest house and had a soda with Phidelis and Andrew and just talked and laughed. We also found out one of the employees at the guest house who we have been calling Grace for almost three weeks is actually called Anna. So embarrassing. I don't know why no one has said anything for all this time. We had a good laugh together about it at least. I also swear I felt an earthquake while typing the first few sentences of this. My mosquito net was moving and I didn't touch it so somehow my room was moving. Maybe I am just going crazy, but it was so weird. Things were definitely moving and this place is cement! Anyways, time for bed now. I wish this post could better reflect the fun we had in the kitchen tonight, but I'm tired and not a great writer. Tomorrow we will attempted to frost the pieces and have a mini Fourth of July celebration (while at work, no national holiday for us here).
